L.H. Hiranandani Hospital: What are breast cancer's signs and symptoms, and how can it be treated?

According to Hiranandani Hospital Powai News, the breast cancer incidents in India have increased as high as 25 per 100,000 women and mortality has gone high as 12.5 per 100,000 women. It’s high time we understand what breast cancer is.

The entity called PABC, Pregnancy-associated breast Cancer which was supposed to be a very rare thing, nearly maybe 1% is now catching up so rapidly in the Indian population we are seeing so many pregnant women and lactating women getting diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast cancer develops when cells in your breast multiply and divide uncontrollably, resulting in a lump of tissue known as a tumor. As you get older and acquire weight, your chances of having breast cancer increase.

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer

The most common sign of breast cancer is a painless lump that is sitting silently in the breast and not getting any trouble to the woman, says Dr. Namita Pandey, Breast Oncosurgeon at Dr. LH Hiranandani Hospital.

The other sign of breast cancer is bleeding from the nipples, the ingrowth of the nipple. Some kind of ulcer on the breast or inflammation which is not going in spite of so many courses of antibiotics. But the most common one is a painless lump and this is the reason why patients tend to take some time and they tend to wait for it to go on its own which results in the delay in the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Women who are at risk

Out of 100 patients, only 10 to 15% of them will be the ones who will be having breast cancer diagnosed because of the family history or genetic predisposition. Rest all 80% of the women have it because of the non-genetic reason says Dr. Sujit Chatterjee CEO, Hiranandani Hospital.

Reasons for getting breast cancer

  1. Bad lifestyle: Breast cancer is supposed to be a lifestyle disease. Bad lifestyle includes obesity, not doing regular exercise, taking lot of stress, not refraining from alcohol and smoking. And other lifestyle things such as delaying the first child birth, and not giving birth at all.
  2. Nalipadity: It is something which is catching up so rapidly as most couples nowadays do not want to have kids. This is increasing the risk of developing breast cancer. Not every woman opting Nalipadity will have breast cancer but it is going to increase the risk of breast cancer in women.
  3. Not breast feeding: Not breast feeding the child is another reason of getting breast cancer. Breast feeding gives lot of protection not only to the child but also to the mother by reducing the risk of breast cancer.
  4. Other things like going for infertility treatment, usage of HRT, hormone replacement therapy which is given to the post-menopausal lady to cope up with the symptoms of post-menopausal symptoms is something which increases the risk of breast cancer.

Breast cancer basically has 4 stages. Stage1 and 2 are supposed to be an early stage. Stage 3 is an advanced stage of breast cancer and stage 4 is the last stage of breast cancer.

  1. Surgery: Surgery such as oncoplastic breast surgery, nipple areola reconstruction, subcutaneous mastectomies, skin sparing mastectomies, reconstructions by LD or tram. These are valid only when a woman is in early stage.
  2. Chemotherapy and hormone therapy: These are two examples of systemic therapies.

Exercise is a good method to lower your chances of getting breast cancer in your postmenopausal years. During menopause, many women acquire weight and body fat. Breast cancer can be more common in people who have a lot of body fat. However, by exercising and losing weight, you may be able to reduce your risk of having breast cancer.
